Regardless of your age or physical health, it’s important to have regular eye exams.
During a complete eye exam, our Tillsonburg eye doctors will not only determine your prescription for eyeglasses or contact lenses, but will also check your eyes for common eye diseases, assess how your eyes work together as a team and evaluate your eyes as an indicator of your overall health.
A comprehensive eye exam at our eye care clinic includes a number of tests and procedures to examine and evaluate the health of your eyes and the quality of your vision. These tests range from simple ones, like having you read an eye chart, to complex tests, such as using a high-powered lens to examine the health of the tissues inside of your eyes.
Eyecare experts recommend you have a complete eye exam every one to three years, depending on your age, risk factors, and physical condition.
Visit Our Tillsonburg Optometrists For Pediatric Eye Exams
Some experts estimate that approximately 5% to 10% of pre-schoolers and 25% of school-aged children have vision problems. According to the Canadian Association of Optometrists (CAO), infants and toddlers should undergo their first eye examination between the ages of 6 and 9 months; preschool children should undergo at least one eye examination between the ages of 2 and 5 years old and school children aged 6-19 years old should undergo an eye examination annually. Children with existing vision problems or risk factors may need to have their eyes examined more frequently. Comprehensive eye examinations for children are fully covered by OHIP once a year from birth until the age of 19. Read more about Pediatric Eye Exams.
Common risk factors for vision problems include:
- premature birth
- developmental delays
- turned or crossed eyes
- family history of eye disease
- history of eye injury
- other physical illness or disease
Patients From Delmer, Rosanna & Ostrander Are Welcome To Visit Us For Their Annual Eye Exam
The Canadian Association of Optometrists recommends that adults aged 20-39 years undergo an eye examination every 2-3 years; adults aged 40-64 years should undergo an eye examination every 2 years read more about Vision After 40 and adults aged 65 years and older should undergo an eye examination annually read more about Vision After 65.
Some adults, such as contact lens wearers, may require more frequent examinations. Doctors also often recommend more frequent examinations for adults with diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders, because many diseases can have an impact on vision and eye health. Because the risk of eye disease (such as cataracts and macular degeneration) continues to increase with advancing age, OHIP provides coverage for one full eye examination annually for seniors aged 65 and above OHIP Coverage.
