What is Myopia?

Myopia is the medical term for “near-sightedness”; objects and people up close are clear, but the eye is unable to focus on things further away in the distance.

The shape of the eye is elongated, leaving the focal point unable to reach the back of the eye (retina).

Myopia is a growing concern amongst children today, especially children under the age of 10.

With more time spent indoors focusing more on screens and up-close, an increasing amount of children are becoming more myopic than ever before.

It is currently estimated that 50 billion people (half of the global population) will be myopic by the year 2050!

If myopia is left untreated, it can result in LONG LASTING vision issues, possibly even BLINDNESS. Due to the elongated shape of the eye, as it continues to stretch, it can lead to retinal detachments, Macular Degeneration, Glaucoma, and early cataract development.

Our office is certified to dispense MiyoSmart lenses; a specialty single vision lens developed with a treatment zone to allow for a clear focus area and a defocused area that manages myopia simultaneously. This slows the progression of myopia up to 60% so that children will not end up as near-sighted.

Made from impact resistant and durable plastic, with an anti-scratch and anti-glare coating included, as well as UV protection, this lens is made for an active child’s lifestyle!
